i like that bujold balances miles' absolutely insane improvisational strategic skills and teenage invincibility complex with genuine existential horror the first time he encounters death by his own (indirect) hand and a general sense that he keeps digging himself way too deep into this situation. what a delicious cocktail to sip on!

boy, reading this after Shards of Honor/Barrayar is craaaaaazy. miles is like "wow i sure do want to solve the mystery of who elena's mother is" and i am like "trust me if you discover that information you will rue the day and regret...everything...! have fun miles, i love you so much!"

He doesn't have any need to be buying old ships and putting himself in debt or looking for a dangerous shipment to a war zone. Then why is he doing all of this?

Is it just that he's looking for a sense of purpose after failing the test or something else?

Only two hours on the planet and Helen already poked out someone's eye, Miles got a slave and Botari already bent and spread.

Even if the father says the opposite he can't hide that he sees Miles as a impaired kid and he feels sorry about him and Miles hates that.

I didn't see the main mystery (for now) involving Elena.

Chapter 2

I like the length of the chapters and I'm not sure exactly what's going to happen next but the conflict is there. He's physically impaired and there's expectations about him so he has some shoes to fill. He I suspect he's about to do something reckless.
