“My God.” Simon closed his eyes. “What happened to this country? How could it come to this so quickly?”
“Because people are naïve enough to believe it will never happen…It’s not the first time a dictator’s seized power in a country while people partied and thought their freedom was safe. And it won’t be the last.”

Göring skewered a large piece of sausage from his plate and shoved it into his mouth.
“We are making plans…We will eliminate the vermin in the country completely. Not only the Jews but communists, sexual deviants, gypsies, the cripples. Anyone who cannot or will not serve our beloved Fatherland will be gone. Dead to us.”

“Guilt,” Bill repeated the word. “That disgraceful emotional imposition handed down by religion.”

“The truth”? Simon smiled. “That’s the challenge, I suppose. I’ve made some useful contacts and I’m listening to different points of view. But the true is an elusive quarry. And just when you think you’ve found it there’s always another point of view to consider.”
