Finally, the money issue solved, but so much stress to get there. At the same time I feel like it could’ve been avoided if he hadn’t just rushed into Oxford without the costs actually figured out, he ridiculously underestimated the cost of his own care.

How do you accidentally turn an attempted handshake into a face slap??? And how does everyone pretend it didn’t happen? Politicians are a different breed I guess, all about the gaslighting, if I ignore it it didn’t happen, everyone let’s be delusional together…

The rich dude is even worse than I thought! Instead of doing something he so easily could he’s going to torture the disabled guy for the rest of the school year before covering the difference. What a savior complex, what a terrible human being…

How ridiculous is it that there are people who can instantly drop 50k on someone they meet at a party and they probably think they’re so magnanimous improving someone’s life when there are literally billions of people just as deserving and in need as that one party goer?

Judy’s job is kind of awesome, get to go to class and take notes, all the fun of school without the stress of having to take tests or write papers.

Honestly, after hearing his previous experiences, following the rules of a fire drill seems not as bad as it did at the start of the book…

No offense to his “genius and influence as a disabled person,” but I think Oxford will do just fine without his contributions to “their reputation and financial success.” Were any of these actual conversations people had with him or just the way he wants to dramatize his life?

I don’t find it unreasonable for a school not to cover costs for an aide, but I also see his point that a disabled student wouldn’t be able to attend a school without an aide. I just don’t know enough about free colleges to know what is reasonable. In the US it’s an obvious no, you’ve got to provide your own support, but in a place where school is covered an aide seems reasonable as part of the support

Do they do college different in South Africa? Going to college at 18 is the general expectation for people going to college here… I’m kind of stunned at every good turn that this guy gets, the networking behind his success is insane. And how did he go to school in Canada and not have these same care aide issues? Just wasn’t as disabled yet or just trying to build up the Oxford opposition he overcame?

It’s just beyond me how a person could survive weeks of not going poop, and how it just never came up with all the times he must’ve gone pee, and how there are care aides who can act like it’s weird having to deal with someone’s bathroom needs! What do they think their job is if not dealing with the bodily functions of someone who can’t do any of it himself?

Weeks since his last bowel movement?!! He’s going to need surgery for that much impaction…

Absurdity of the situation? I can’t understand how he’s managed to do all he’s done, traveling around the world even, and also not had bed baths as a regular part of his life as a disabled person… definitely a very uncomfortable situation he’s come to be in with unmet (and apparently unrealistic for the UK) expectations, but hardly absurd.

Did this exchange with the taxi driver actually happen or is he just making it up?

I’m not feeling this chapter as much as the beginning of the book. Different day different attitude? Regardless, I think he’s likely making a bad choice choosing to be offended by his care aide making out with his friend at a club considering what he experienced in the prologue making do with someone else as a care aide.

I haven’t really considered the issue of education for disabled kids in developing countries, something to look into more.

I’d say fire him immediately, but I know how hard it is to find good home health aides so just getting rid of Six immediately likely isn’t an option.
