The author's main idea seems to be that absolute statements are rarely useful in history and that nuanced understanding is necessary. I agree. Oversimplifications ARE too neat and pat. Historical figures are rarely entirely good or entirely bad, even by contemporary morals. This book seems fine. There's a little straw-manning here or there, but mostly it seems fine.
