The father died from blood poisoning he got from a snake bite received on their way to the coast. The daughter burns his corpse on a pyre on the beach and falls asleep in grief and despair.
The next morning, she's woken up by a bear who talks to her. He saw the glow of the huge fire. Now, he accompanies her on her way back home.
I'm not made for such sentimental back-to-nature stories in praise of the noble savage.

Another hopefully simple read in French. I'm confused by the passé simple this book mostly is told in and which we never used in school being limited to literary use.
A bittersweet sentimental tale of a father and daughter, the two last humans on Earth. The father teaches his daughter all he knows and tells her about the dead mother. Call it heart-warming or cheesy.
