chapter 6 is on women’s hockey, chapter 7 is on ableism (it’s only 10 pages) and chapter 8 is on homophobia. this book was published in 2021 and it’s pretty impressive to see how many advances i, a non-hockey person, have seen in terms of the creation of the pwhl (featuring vancouver goldeneye sarah nurse in the book!) and the success of “heated rivalry.” wish there was more on ableism though.

chapter 4 focuses on sexual violence against women while chapter 5 is on abuse & hazing. similar issue of structuring here—authors introduce egregious examples of players inflicting/experiencing abuse but don’t always provide proper lead-up or context. chapter 5 especially seems to focus on youth/minor hockey which i think requires a bit more context.

chapter 4 focuses on sexual violence against women while chapter 5 is on abuse and hazing. similar issue in previous chapters where there are quite egregious examples of players inflicting/experiencing abuse or legal cases but sometimes not without proper lead-up/context. chapter 5 especially appears to focus on youth/minor hockey which i think begs a bit more context about the culture.

chapter 2 focuses on a very basic overview of the north american hockey governance system (canada plays hot potato with a lot of things) which should’ve just been a graph while chapter 3 is about racism. grateful for the discussions of racism in hockey culture, comparisons to other leagues (such as the nba), stereotypes and mentions of anti-indigenous racism but the chapter did not feel well-structured, ngl.

enlightening introductory chapters. some of the quotes feel a bit rambly and needed more context, but it’s a fine start.
