A flat tarmac road curves on for miles through another immaculate Highland estate. Through woodlands thick with yellow azalea, through birch thickets carpeted with wild garlic, to what appears on the map to be an easy walk uphill via a narrow valley to the Falls of Glomach.

I have a sense that maybe the remote isolated beauty of this place might just be enough to draw Moth forward, maybe we might actually be able to find our way through this remote landscape and wherever that journey leads.

The tent looks very small on the stony shore of Loch na Gainimh, totally overshadowed by the sheer-sided immensity of the mountains rising on the opposite side of the loch.

The clouds begin to break and although it's nearly midnight it's still light enough to see sheep on the shoreline and waves catching the moonlight out at sea. The Highland semi-darkness eventually fades into night, but the scene remains: a painting in blue shadows.

Back in the kitchen I pick up the guidebook again. The Cape Wrath Trail. Two hundred and thirty miles running from the north-west corner of Scotland south to Fort William.

There is no walking on level ground: to leave the house is to go up or downhill. To go down is easy, but there will always be a hill to return by. To go uphill first means that you save the easy downhill for the return. 'I'll put the kettle on then.'

'It's downhill all the way tomorrow, I think it could be an easier day.' Hope rises in the evening dew and takes flight with a thousand crane flies into the soft air.
