this book would be great IF it didn’t keep insulting other classicists’ work by invoking their psychosexual traumas explanations for the directions of their works. gross! neat little excursus on the mythical Ganymede though

the philological work done in here is delightful and the writing is witty but academically respectful. however, i suspect some motivated reasoning at play here in the author’s fixation on legal codes against pederasty + in his readings of myth. also don’t like the use of the modern term “homosexuality” to describe greek men-boy / men-men relationships

greatly enjoy his dry wit and fierce criticism of modern academia
