I know racist, misogynist, and generally violent aggression has been cornerstone of what it means to be a cop in America since our founding, but it's been 30 years since this book was written and things have only gotten worse.

I read fiction to escape reality, not look into a mirror. I think my ANVH reread may have come to a quick end :-/
