Something was there that kept him going, and it was all he had left.

Sometimes he walked with hope in his heart, and sometimes his heart was filled with defiance, desperation and sorrow. He did not really have a destination anymore, or perhaps both his eyes and his soul had just lost sight of it. And the less he knew where he was going, the more he became entangled in the unhappiness and ways of the world.

And so from one mile to the next he wove for himself an even finer web of excuses for why he had to do what he did and why he would have to go on doing the same.

And when offered thanks he said thanks were really merited by the other, the greater king to come.

The only thing pulling him was his own desire to honor the greatest ruler of all times and places; and he strove never to let this desire slacken or wane, no matter how absorbing or confusing the alien world around him might be.
