Goood. Old fashioned. But good. Especially if you’re an Edwardian Anglophile.

"The Jolly Corner" (1909) is yet another outstanding story.

"The Birthplace" is a bit of Jamesian Screw, but dense (1903); "The Beast in the Jungle" (1903), one of James' great masterpieces, I had just recently reread. So on now to the final story,m"The Jolly Corner" (1909), one of James' final pieces.

"Tone of Time" and "Mrs. Medwin" are slighter

"The Great Good Place", is Fadiman's favorite, but not mine. "The Tree of Knowledge," which anti-Jamesians like to adduce, is perfect..., imo.

"The Altar of the Dead" is a bit thick for my tastes.
" 'Europe' ", on the other hand , is sheer perfection!

"The Middle Years" -- So far, every one of these stories, in this collection (Fadiman), is a gem.

"Brooksmith" aka Sancho Panza à la James.mthis, btw, since I haven't said this yet, is an excellent selection of stories, 17 of them, from 1877-1909.

Fadiman, who adds brief critical comments after each story, makes a good case for seeing "The Pupil" as a true masterpiece.
