Cassie’s got a theory about cabin crew and colds. She reckons they catch every bug going in their first year of work. Then one day they wake up and they’re immune to it all. They’ve got used to breathing recycled air in planes, airport terminals and hotel bedrooms. They can fight off viruses from every corner of the globe. They’re invincible.

Working on the desks has taught me some of the patterns of holiday emergencies. Forget Friday 13th, for example. Statistically Monday 27th is the worst day for accidents abroad. It’s also good to know that if you make it to day three of your holiday you’ve got a decent chance of getting home OK. Apparently the vast majority of serious illnesses happen in the first 48 hours of a trip.

There’s always something about airports at night that calms everything down. The reflections on the windows make it hard to see outside, so you really feel as if you’re in a bubble. It’s like a step out of the real world. You can’t control anything so you just have to relax into it. It helps that everyone’s the same. We’re all tired. We all want to be somewhere else. There’s nothing any of us can do.

Mrs Harman and her family remind me of my sister-in-law and her daughter *shudders* my sympathies for Ben on that whole trip!
