I feel sad about Eilis’s homesickness, especially in the past when there were no phones or social media. I’m worried about her future, and I hope Father Flood can deal with that. Also, I’m confused that Miss Fortini claimed Eilis “crossed” Mr. Barcotti. It makes no sense to me just because of her lack of passion, and makes this a thing that Mr. Barcotti will never forget.

I think Tobin used the journey to America to redefine. The cramped ship sailing serves as a sort of purgatory before reaching America as her irish girlhood is ripped apart in sickness and her cruel cabinmates. This is where Georgina comes in and helps her rebuild herself into something new. She is taught to stand up straight, and act with confidence much as how we imagine an adult to act. She is no longer a child.

It's interesting how much golf Rose plays so far in the book. I think that Colm Toibin does this purposely using golf as an example to show that it's not just a hobby for Rose but an escape. It shows Rose's independence and desire for a different life beyond her town. Since golf is tied to higher status, I think that it also suggests that she is reaching for something more.

The Nylon is extremely popular in the store, pulling Eilis all day into the work. This is one difference between Brooklyn and her home in Ireland: the population. On the other hand, when Eilis presents the pair of stockings to Mrs. Kehoe, the old woman doesn’t seem to understand that it’s a gift and is willing to pay for it. I think that’s because it’s too costly in her view, or a difference of mindset between them.
