Status Updates From Stephen Fry's Incomplete & ...

We are taking leaps and bounds, which is a pity. But the book is WAY more detailed than the radio program - hence why I quit the audio and am focusing solely on the print version.

I do like how Fry puts the music (invention of new styles but also of instruments) in context with historical events and persons. After all, many composers were heavily influenced by the time they lived in. Circumstances matter.

Well, I decided to stop listening to the actual radio program and instead am only reading the paperback - there is just so much more detail here and constantly checking where in the book I was compared to the audio fille got so tedious. Luckily, Fry is hilarious in print, too. :D

We're finally at the invention of opera! Well, on the radio show at least. I gotta say, as much as I love hearing Fry's voice, the radio production this is based on is far INFERIOR to the paperback. I'm so glad I did NOT just get the audio or I would have missed out on one hell of a lot of context!
We've entered and passed the Renaissance and are now in the baroque period. This is important because ... (see comments)

We started at the very beginning of human history and covered everything until the invention of plainsong thanks to Saints Ambrose and Gregory (around year 600).


Now on to some real action!
