Empecé este libro buscando salir de mi zona de confort y vaya si lo he conseguido. Esta novela es completamente diferente a cualquier otra que haya podido leer antes. Ni batallas, ni misterios, ni giros inesperados; solo dos personas interactuando que no parecen entenderse en lo absoluto entre sí y que, al mismo tiempo, idealizan todo del otro sabiendo que no es posible un futuro juntos.

It would be trite and a possible “waste of effort” to point out that Komako could do better than the oafish married tourist Shimamura: all their interactions scream out how little he seems to care. Yet the subtextual tragedy is that maybe she cannot do better as her career as a geisha and the lonely location don’t offer her a lot of options. Still not sure what role Yoko plays other than Komako’s young rival.
