Mark is recuperating from the beating that he took from the Nazis and feel that he has lost his self-respect and reason for living since he has looked evil in its face. Father Martin encourages Mark to go back to England and tell his government what he has seen firsthand - not only what the Germans can do but are capable of.

So far it is an interesting story about an ordinary Etonian Master who is tasked with spying in Austria in the 1940s while Britain prepares for war.
