Having been disappointed by many terrible novels lately, it is a joy and a relief to return to more reliably enjoyable non-fiction. Non-fiction writing may be good or bad (here, it's mediocre) but if you are interested in a topic enough to pick up a book about it, you are at least likely to find some redeeming value in having read about it.

the early portions, mostly biographical may be a little slow for some readers. As a Chicago history buff the vision of the early 20th century in the city intrigued me and placed the Man in his time.
