A little under halfway through the book. The chapter regarding Monsieur Forestier's death in Cannes was so ambiently written, with long descriptions of the beautiful scenery contrasting against the harsh health of Charles, and his deteriorating mental state. All the while, the thought that Duroy will take advantage of the fact that Madame Forestier will soon be a widow lingering at the back of the reader's mind.

She leant over towards him and whispered: "I will come and pay you a visit one of these days."
He felt himself redden. "You know — you know — my place is very small."
She smiled: "That does not matter. It is you I shall call to see, and not your rooms."

This the first book in a long time where I'm genuinely enjoying and looking forward to reading it. The descriptive and straightforward style of writing is really fun to read. They do kind of glaze the protagonist a bit too much but fun to read regardless.
