Chapter 21: To Be or to Do
“Modern Christians … know almost nothing about the inner life. They are like a temple that is all exterior without any interior. Color, light, sound, appearance, motion - these are thy gods, O Israel. …What a man is, must be shown to be more important than what he does.”

“In the day that will try every man’s works, how much we know will not come in for much consideration. What and whom we have loved will be about all that matters then.”

“The cross not only brings Christ’s life to an end, it ends also the first life, the old life, of every one of his true followers. It destroys the old pattern, the Adam pattern, in the believer’s life, and brings it to an end. Then the God who raised Christ from the dead raises the believer and a new life begins.”

“Every Christian will become at last what his desires have made him. We are the sum total of our hungers.”

“There is an evil which I have seen under the sun and which in its effect upon the Christian religion may be more destructive than communism, Romanism, and liberalism combined. It is the glaring disparity between theology and practice among professing Christians.”

“Unless the sinner is willing to reform his way of living, he will never know the inward experience of regeneration.”

Such truth in chapter 11!

“One marked difference between the faith of our fathers, as conceived by the fathers and the same faith, as understood and lived by their children is that the fathers were concerned with the root of the matter, while their present-day descendants seem concerned only with the fruit.”
