I still don't know what this books is - certainly not what the title promises.

I was hoping this would give me some tools to talk about photography in the classroom, but so far not really. This is mostly about the history of photography.

The commentary (I'm not that far into the book, but peeked) seems to focus on the role of photography and the way it was perceived and evaluated at the time discussed photos were taken.

So far it does not promise to be of much use. The reproductions are on the small side; we get two or three spreads per person, with much space devoted to binliography, which doesn't seem to connect much to the (scant, impressionistic) formal analysis. There's sometimes very little sense of coherence in the texts, unrelated statements appearing out of the blue.
