Chapter 17 is one of my favorites so far, and does an impressive job of moving forward through the mid 20s and tying three seemingly dissimilar arenas together. For all the buildup, the Dry Law Debate deserved more attention and detail, imo, but that’s probably just personal preference.

"The Blackstone Female Institute, which [James Cannon Jr.] Served as principal, was a two-year college [in Virginia]. He offered this advice to candidates for admission: 'No young ladies are wanted as students at the institute who are not willing to accept the guidance of the principal as that of an older friend, who is planning to give them such training as will develop them into helpful and attractive women.'"
