Status Updates From Cats in Space and Other Places

The Ballad of Lost C’mell: this was a good story, I appreciated it leant a little on cat-people being used as “girly-girls” in comparison to the geisha but it wasn’t salacious about it. The political aspect was touched on but not fully explored

The Pride: enjoyed this one! The Lionmen are such an interesting take on the alien cat and I enjoyed the pieces of their culture we were shown

Black Destroyer: humanity absolutely would welcome the murder cat onto their ships

Duty Calls: I really enjoyed this one! I liked the realistic touch to the alien species and the occupied worlds

Chanur’s Homecoming: reads like a standard scifi ship battle but not the right format to really get into it fully

Well Worth the Money: my favourite one so far! Kelvin is such an excellent cat and a valued member of the crew

The Tail: a look at a cats daft half an hour, well-written

Space-Time for Springers: loved this look at a cats thoughts and the interactions with the household at large

Ordeal in space: I’ve got great sympathy for Bill as I hate the scene in space films when people fall away into space. The little kitten getting itself stuck was very typical and cute

Bullhead: this was a fun folklore read, dialogue took a little getting used to with the accent it’s written in

Who’s There: aww very cute story. Baby kittens do get into the wildest places

Tales of a Starship Cat: very sweet poem about a cat on a space ship, reminiscent of cats of sailing ships

Schrödinger’s Cat: this is very typical Ursula K Le Quinn, difficult to comprehend and wonderfully written all the same. It’s a snapshot of a wider universe

Ship of Shadows: even more of a confusing setup to start with, the folklore makes more sense at the end of the story than during it.

Mouse: nice short story, definitely a believable setup. Only minimal cats this time but I liked the vector storyline

The Game of Rat and Dragon: setup and the explanation is a little confusing but I do like the vibes of cats teaming up with people to fight unknown entities in the void of space
