The golden fleece is red, "like to a cloud that blushes red (ἐρεύθεται) with the fiery beams of the rising sun." In Thalaba the Destroyer (written in English around 1800), gold hair means red hair, with footnotes that make it clear the poet thinks that's the usual meaning of gold hair. Prose Edda, gold is red. Starting to suspect the current gold = yellow is an outlier.

"The sun went down, and Jason’s work was done." and he barely does anything!!!! he doesn't even seduce Medea himself, it's Hera and Aphrodite who ask Aphrodite to ask her son Eros to make Medea fall madly in love with him at their behest, so that she will help Jason survive his trial, which he only undertakes once he has become impervious. what a joke of a "hero"

Book 2 completed, and Jason continues to be useless. Argonautica is a way more apt title than Jason and the Argonauts, since so far it's really the Argonauts making it happen. (So excited for Medea to show up soon.)

It’s like if The Odyssey was worse.

"wait, why have I digressed so widely, talking / about Aethalides?" so charmed by this 1775 years after Apollonius originally penned it, this is so relatable lmao (and why i love reading from the antiquities, they're never so far divorced from modern times as you would think)
