The investigation reveals Norman’s fractured identity and dark past. After learning his mother planned to marry Joe Considine, Norman poisoned them both. Unable to accept his mother’s death, he developed three personalities: Norman, his mother, and his adult self. When Mary arrived, his mother personality killed her. Norman is declared psychotic and will likely spend the rest of his life in a mental hospital.

Lila searches Bates’s house for evidence and discovers his mother’s preserved bedroom and disturbing books. Suspecting Mary is trapped in the cellar, she investigates and finds Mrs. Bates’s corpse.
