p86 inaccuracies: "Henequen" is *not* "marijuana." It's agave. And on that note, "marijuana—at the time used in the manufacture of heavy-duty rope" is also incorrect. Hemp is what the rope is made from. Marijuana is the drug.

Still a succinct, easy-to-read overview to get anyone up to speed. Who is "Anderson" (99)? The quote about Melo seems like it should have a "[sic]" since it's spelled "Mello" in the quote (99).

So far, a snappy, concise read that lays the foundation for the modern part coming up. If you have a background in US history, Longley's writing will easily make sense. First proofreading error: "Washington dispatched agents to Latin American to negotiate...." Should be, "Latin America."
