Aww, when kids ask Gervase his favorite story, he tells them it’s The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde. His grandmother, who was from an Irish family, loved Wilde.

I’m enjoying this very much. There are so many funny stories about Gervase and his relatives. His family was Catholic, too, and lower middle class, so I feel like I’m getting an insight into a different side of England than I normally read about in novels. It’s also fun to read about life in northern England and his growing up in the 50s/60s.
