Status Updates From Lark Rise (Essential Penguin)

I love the garden/food details at the end of the chapter ‘Besieged Generation’.

“Survivals” about the old folks in the hamlet is wonderful. We get to meet Queenie, who I always loved in the TV show. Flora’s description of her grandfather reminds me of Silas Marner and her grandmother of a scene in Adam Bede. The writing is so lovely. She gives such dignity to the working farm laborers. It reminds me of Miss Read too.

What a lovely first chapter! I feel immediately drawn in.
