Status Updates From Two Rivers

The book is moving back and forth in time from Harper’s childhood/young adulthood in the late 1950s and early 1960s to the present in 1980, and to a night in 1968. In the early timeline, he is falling in love with Betsy and building a life around her when they are still children. In 1980, Maggie stays with them, and his friend Brooder kills himself, while in 1968, Brooder kills someone while Harper watches.

Harper is still grieving the loss of his wife Betsy as he celebrates his daughter Shelley’s 12th birthday. That same day, a rail car crash delivers a pregnant teen to his life, and he cannot leave her without help.
