An old favorite from the 1960s. and (like so many of my old faves) no longer kept on most public library shelves. So I hunted down a first hardback edition to re-read.
I think it one of the finest examples of literary historical woman-centered fiction--may I suggest it's like Forever Amber (for high drama and rich portrayal of a fresh historical era), but with a main character who's neither beggar nor seductress?
