I particularly enjoyed learning that in Egypt there are people who actually have boats on the Nile that serve as their houses. Lord Malfine has really come to grow on me, his love for his best friend's daughter well-being helps him overcome his misery from war. Saving her from the murderer's grip has gotten him out of the house, and brought him into a better light about himself and those who are around him.

My favorite part was learning of the Bazaar or Khan el-Khalili, which are these big open markets that fill the streets of Cairo, and are covered with tents. They are said to be cleaner than the London street markets because they are swept and well cared for. Miss Lillian, is by far my favorite, her narrative is amusing, and her troubles with her care taker's murderous methods puts me on my toes from her point of view

The most fascinating detail about the city of Cairo in 1830 was that city was actually in better shape than the dirty industrial streets of London. At the time the city was split into sections for tourists and locals, for their ideas of what is 'accepted' culturally often clashed. By this point, I was introduced to Miss Lillian to whom I quite enjoy, especially her commentary on events. She is livelier than Malfine.

Learned that during the early 1900's when Archaeology became popular, Mummies within Egypt were considered cheap and worthless and neglected or sold on black markets. Lord Malfine has a particularly melancholy mood as he narrates and often does not allow himself to dwell on the small fleeting happiness he occasionally gets within the novel as he struggles from post war injuries a few years back and deaths of friends
