Losing patience when an animal behaves in a frustrating way = feeling like you’ve run out of alternatives. “I find I can stay calm because I know that if one thing doesn’t work I always have a number of other [things] I can try.”

People who…sit at desks day after day lose touch with their bodies. In the same way, horses [confined to stalls] can lose awareness of parts of their physical selves. Stroking with the wand expands their sensory image of themselves, which in turn promotes self-confidence.

“Animals are wonderfully honest—the only way you can truly connect to them is by being fully present.”

The puppy struggled & wanted to get away while she worked on him, but after she left after the session, he stopped the unwanted behavior. This is good to know—they won’t necessarily be lulled into accepting it, or immediately calmed/affected by it, but it works.

“Following your intuition in using TTouch is a primary part of the method.”
“you don’t necessarily see a change in the animal’s behavior at the time of the session…a session of ten minutes is usually long enough.”

Animals “are sensitive to the emotional atmosphere around them and they absorb and reflect the subliminal messages their owners send out.”

When our animals resist us or don’t cooperate with us we just have to look to figure out what it is they need, what it is we can do for them. But of course in doing so we also have to be careful to set boundaries.

You can be the most loving, easygoing trainer in the world, but when…you can’t get an animal to cooperate, you can lose your perspective/start thinking you’re solely at fault…that what’s happening is a reflection of your inability to get the job done/so you feel threatened & frustrated. Tension builds up. To release it, I sat back & took some deep breaths. Breathing centers you. Then I felt her connecting.

The watchword here is open-mindedness…When you work with a creature, simply focus on what you’re doing instead of ‘trying’ for connection. Seeking too hard or waiting for some kind of heightened contact will block your own experience/make your animal nervous/self-conscious. Thinking of yourself as possessing a ‘special’ healing quality will also limit your ability to be open to the moment.
