Status Updates From All Quiet on the western Front

I wonder if a soldier so exhausted and pummeled by the nightmare of trench warfare could be creative enough to describe the surreal nature of it all... but then, I just finished 'With the Old Breed,' which also describes dreamlike hallucinations on the battlefield.

The amount of times a single sentence has hit me so hard it took my breath away is astounding. This writing is unlike anything I’ve read before.
