I’ve been telling everyone that this will probably get me out of my slump so let’s just say there are some BIG SHOES to fill

I love Steinbeck, so this was genuinely disappointing. I found Ethan underdeveloped and Mary even worse, more like an extension of Ethan than a character in her own right. The plot was bizarrely difficult to follow despite having only a few characters and it being short.
The moral discussions felt shallow. There were occasional brilliant little reflective sentences, but they weren’t enough to save the book. Idk
