I’m sure I’ll share more later but I can already say that this text draws upon something that (always) already seems inscribed within my innermost self. It took me a long time to process the first 10 pages—do you ever get intimidated by something because it’s delivering exactly what you were looking for?—but I’m on more of a steady roll. Not to mention this epistolary novel is very heavily theory-based!

Reading this again after the good news I received from ****. Mackey does what Shange implores when she tells us to hyper focus on the capacity/capability of the individual word in every moment.

Finished. Weird. Some very powerful moments and some moments where Mackeys attempt at breaking language when describing sound (the sun ra way. The phonetic games were) a bit much. Bedouin hornbook 6/5/24-6/11/24

This book has become less incredible. It’s like I’m reading to find nuggets at this point and am kinda on the fence (not that it matters for anyone but me!!!) about the repair I’ve poetic “descriptions”. But then every like 15 pages he writes the most incredible paragraph ever. The public/private /inside/outside on pg 66-68 is so incredibly important. But putting down for now.

Slow going - partly due to holiday distractions and partly due to the fact I think it works best reading a few letters at a time as there is so much to unpack. Certainly unique - almost surreal at times, but also at times like a monologue from an eccentric academic
