Not poor Polly trying to DIY a new family out of Tom and Ann!! :'0
It is actually so interesting seeing how vague the relationship between Tom and Polly is - I think most of the time Polly sees him as a friend, then he almost acts like a father figure when her own dad fails, and then things get really blurry. I struggle to see how the natural progression of this is romance - maybe romance was never the intention...!

I'm trying to read this from the perspective of the adults this time and... they're all crazy lol. What do you mean Ivy lets Tom babysit Polly without ever having met him before!! Maybe the 1980s were just a different time lol. It's also quite sinister thinking of Tom's obsession with "hero business" knowing what he admits to later in the story...
