“All Sabbaths are a direct, face-to-face, underdog challenger to death. The Sabbath looks death in the eye and says, ‘O death, where is your sting?’(1 Cor. 15:55)”

This chapter is really challenging me to desire more of God. To not be content with a little rest here and a little rest there, but to be willing to play so much that failure makes me better at delighting in life/ challenging the sting of death.

“There is meant to be more risk and danger on the Sabbath than any other day. It is the risk of playing with God communally amid his creation, aroused by sensuality, and open to the terrifying presence of the Trinity.”

I’m realizing I might need a kindle to share my highlights… but anyway, a play day?? Count me in, but also, how do I do that?? The experimentation necessary to practice sabbath is scary

“What if the Sabbath is creating space to hear the Father speak to us as his beloved as he serves us as the Host?”

I love this book. The Sabbath is a FEAST! And it aids us to hear God and look forward to the feast to come. Leviticus 23 comes to mind. All of God’s ordained feast days are anchored by Sabbaths. This makes me think of Beholding, where the author calls our practices altars of availability!!!

Multiple analogies are sticking with me better now that I’m reading this instead of audio guzzling all the goodness. Mostly been pondering the similarity of Sabbath to the moment when a child is born and is no longer just in the mind/womb of the mother, but now exists separately and the bonding can begin!! The seventh day is when the bonding with God began for Adam and Eve, and I’ve seen that in my own practice!

So so good. Convicting in seeing the pitfalls of just trying to do sabbath for the sake of spiritual rhythms rather than partaking in the celebration of Eden 2.0 in expectation of the coming glory.
