Letter VI might be one of the most beautiful letters I’ve ever read. Such vulnerability and wisdom is a shining light in such a dark and unforgiving an age as the present. I shall love all, indiscriminately.

Simone Weil, in spite of her incessant self degradation, has succeeded in the art of metaphysical letter writing. One gets the impression, in reading her correspondences, of piercing the thin veil of material circumstance into the very heart of a 20th century saint.

I grew up in the Roman Catholic faith, was baptized, received first communion, and was confirmed as an adult into the Church under the patronage of Joan d’Arc. However, I struggle to identify as Catholic in the contemporary (largely conservative) and religiously prescribed sense of the word. Simone’s first letter to Father Perrin articulates her hesitance towards baptism so sweetly and logically. I feel seen.
