Kermode remarks about underreading:

all writers are tied to this marketplace. As a consequence, authors ... tend to ‘ “foreground” sequence and message’ – at the expense, of course, of ‘backgrounding’ large parts of their novels that consequently go virtually unread, ‘resisting all but abnormally attentive scrutiny...most readers ‘underread’ and are encouraged in this practice by authors...

Interesting reading a scholarly work of which half of the focus of the study I have not read. But I will soon and may return to this book again in order to see if I can learn something else about Sebald I may have missed the first time through.

Entering into unknown territory now with the last two major works to be next discussed, seeing as though I have not read them yet.

There is always a place on my end table for a study such as this. especially if the subject is Max Sebald.

Better study than anticipated.

The author forcing me to consider how Sebald made monstrous his collections of memory. Not sure I like that word "monstrous". But I'll play.

A scholarly book that demands my full attention while reading it. I like that. It is hoped I will learn something that helps me better understand the world I live in.
