Very fast and informative read. Reading historical books by black authors not caring to fit the convenient white narrative shoved down our throats is so important & not emphasized enough. Really gives you a true perspective to help understand our history and how things got so skewed and wrong. NF is usually hard for me to get thru but this was a change of pace and gave me 2 books recs I now need to read.

Reading this as a companion to Eric Williams’ book. Clarke was definitely an autodidact; his style is completely devoid of typical academic flourish. Instead it reads like a conversation with an Uncle after Thanksgiving dinner. It’s refreshing(?), I think.

I hate when I happen to read books that make me feel racist for deeply disagreeing with the core message 😅
