I am sure it is a me problem, but I am having a hard time staying engaged. The prose is lovely, but I cannot bring myself to invest in any character. I am least interested in Oscar and Lucinda themselves. They are so eccentric as to feel contrived. I am usually a fan of books that explore how religion, especially religious obsession, twists people and culture. Maybe I am just reading it at the wrong time?

I want to be liking this far more than I am actually liking this. I am finding the language distancing, if lyrical. I am compelled by the damage done to people through fear of being seen conveying emotion, but the illustration is so extreme as to seem almost parodic.

Starting to engage more with this. So many call this Dickensian, and it is, in a way, but I feel myself far less pulled into the world created than I do with Dickens' books, even the ones I don't love.

I struggled a bit at the start of this, but now we are getting into my two favorite subjects: obsession and the handcuffs of inculcated faith. There is a reason I so love Graham Greene. As we move toward O&L actually meeting, I find myself fully immersed and looking forward to finding out how bad Oscar and Lucinda will be for one another.
