Jacob tried to keep from Opal but she was hurt from him doing so. Jacob eventually had to return to Pennsylvania to see Mr. Dumfarthing who gave him a large amount of money to take and use out west. Then he passed, Jacob helped coordinate the funeral, & was heading back west.

Amethyst declares that she’s staying in Medora & helps Pearl at her boarding home. While she love it & Caption McHenry, he doesn’t openly return her affection. Thus when Mrs. Grant comes she returns to Chicago with her.
Medora has a horrendous winter and a lot of wildlife & cattle end up dying. This sends Opal into questioning God and his ways, with the help of her loved one she slowly come back to being herself.

Amethyst discovers the family bible that her mopther wrote her inlaws information in and writes to them to see if they happen to know where Joel is. After sometime of waiting a letter returns letting her know the Joel is out west with a Mr. Jacob Chandler. Amethyst is struggling yet playing with the idea leaving the farm & her father in search of Joel.

Amethyst, also known as Colleen due to her fathers disapproval of the name her mother gave her, is the the aunt of Joel through the O'Shaunasy's. She is the only living relative besides her father, who is in search of Joel in order to keep their family land in the family. Amethyst's father is a grumpy & hateful man that drinks all their money away. While she does that chores, cooks, & pretty much everything else.
