The second book, about the Sons of Wang Lung, was the most difficult to read. Cyclical famine and poverty, the ubiquitous helplessness, are gut-wrenchingly sad, still, as with The Good Earth, an eye into a lost culture. I finished the second book, and I am hearing Pearl Buck's cadenced voice an hour later in the silence of my room.

The end of The Good Earth, the first book I ever read by Pearl S. Buck, and the first book in the Trilogy. I believe I was a little older than 11 when I read this book last, and, sitting here at age 64, many memories still come back to me with the innocence of a young child.
Maria, the 64-year-old, sees and feels much deeper than when was 11. Some differences are shocking.
