The story starts off following a family being witches. Through the story it follows the struggle of the family generation after generation. When the most current generate gets effected by what seems witch trials starting up again. After they suffer great loss of their family, the wife of the husband who is related to witches discovers her own powers and is able to get revenge on those who had hurt them.

The books start off following a plane crash where a preacher survives and begins to spread rumor about witches. It then cuts to the past where the Hawthorne ancestors are being trialed for witchcraft. It shows how the family suffered but few were able escape and continue on with their family line. Now the more present time family suffers and has to find a way to survive.
