I'm half-convinced that every soap opera to ever exist has taken inspiration from Thomas Hardy in one way or another 😅

“to please his wife” and “the fiddler of the reels” show a shift in the theme of the anthology, focusing now on how women can lead to a man’a ruin. joanna is bitter with the fact that emily; the woman her lover wished to marry is now richered than she. thus, she sends her sons and husband to see where they meet their end. and car’line leaves her lover ned for some fiddler. has a child. then marries ned.

on the western circuit: he had it coming. he had sex with her before marriage and at the time he didn't even intend to marry her. she tried her best to learn and didn't mean to deceive him.

for conscience' sake: "oh, no! if it isn't the consequences of my own actions!" okay, soooo if he'd never left his lover to raise THEIR child by herself, he wouldnt have regretted leaving and marry her after many years and be forced to leave because people would notice his and his daughters resemblance.

The son’s veto: this further proves my theory that this anthology follows the theme of women being ruined by men they loved.

Will be updating after every short story.
An imaginative woman: I am not aware as to when this book (or the story itself) was written HOWEVER it seems to me that it was inspired by Hardy’s relationship with his first wife. As his own carelessness lead to her death. I don’t know it might have been inspired by it.
