“If I had my way, I’d give it ‘em on the soles of the feet the same as the Turks do.”

That familiar feeling I always get from Orwell is here again—a quiet, underlying sense of unease. There's no obvious tension, but the entire novel carries this persistent feeling that something isn't quite right. The vivid descriptions and charming conversations can't dispel it. And now poor Elizabeth, the young woman, the orphan has entered the story.

Some parts are a bit dull… The story moves somewhere else, away from the city. The man has a mistress, and the mistress has a lover. While walking in the forest with his dog, they get lost and end up in a village. After a couple of strange dialogues, they return home. A bit odd chapter.

Flory; The British Empire is simply a device for giving trade monopolies to the English - or rather to gangs of Jews and Scotchmen.

I'm amazed by Orwell's vocabulary. Even in the first few chapters, he uses countless names of flowers and trees, regional and old-fashioned words, and such vivid language to describe people and landscapes. It's unbelievable.

"Ellis was an intelligent man and an able servant of his firm, but he was one of those Englishmen – common, unfortunately – who should never be allowed to set foot in the East."
How awful — hundreds of people like this went to the East…

Bribery, intrigue, slander, and gangs—that’s how it begins from the very first moment.
