“I don’t know about all that,” I tell him, but his words hold some truth. He is one of the best things to come out of this summer. He’s helped me forget about my day-to-day battles, to look forward to the moment he walks through my door to say hello.

“You know I have been,” he coaxes. “Don’t deny it.”

An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” he says with a rich laugh.

“Should have told me that earlier,” I joke in response.

If you asked me to define chemotherapy, I’d tell you it’s the act of pumping poison into a human body with the hopes it’ll kill the other poison before it kills the person.

It’s much like picking your poison, except I don’t feel like I had much of a choice.
