It was a new play, but an old story. It was about James ancestors, Banquo and Fleance. In re-writing history, Shakespeare made some changes.
In the true story, Banqo joined Macbeth in killing Duncan.

When Elizabeth I of England was dying, childless, she named James VI of Scotland as her successor. He became James I of England. In Aug 1606 James was at Hampton Court, entertaining his Brother in Law, King Christian of Denmark. A play was acted for them, Macbeth.

The witches and their queen, Hecate, prepare for another meeting with Macbeth. -There is evidence to suggest that Shakespeare did not write this scene, and some people believe it was inserted by an over enthusiastic actor, who saw that the audiences enjoyed the withe scenes, and decided to give them another!
