Reading with my son as our summer book. I read the first quarter to him aloud and now we're doing a buddy read. Really liking so far.

Chosen as an Own Voices story-- the native Hawaii part, not the shark ancestry. 🙃

I am one hour in & my honest reaction-- despite outstanding reviews-- is that I am not convinced that I want to read a 29-hour book about the white Southern experience in the 1930s.

Especially true coming off the heels of William Kent Krueger's, "This Tender Land" (1930s, centering the story of an Oceti Sakowin boy) & Stacey Lee's, "The Downstairs Girl" (1890s Atlanta, main characters are Chinese & Black folks).

Stoppp, how am I tearing up already and it's only 50 pages in. Oh you, Alice Oseman. You've done it again.

How many books and stories do I have to read with no content warnings filled with r* and SA where women are just trying to avoid starvation and survive? Yes, all of history. But the authors depicting it in detail again and again feels like its own form of cruelty.

I am only at the very start of this book and I am already crying in public...

I am at 75% and Libby is not working today. Send help. I must know Margaret's next move.
