One of my reading goals this year is to explore more Filipino literature.

This month, I’m reading Gapô by Lualhati Bautista. My second after Dekada ’70, a novel about motherhood, resistance, and political awakening during Martial Law.

Gapô is set in Olongapo during the U.S. naval base era and examines identity, power, and belonging.

That middle stretch was heavy with truth, restraint, and heartbreak. Pausing so I can breathe before continuing.

Started this last year and carried it over into this year.
It felt too good to rush, so I’m taking my time (hence the page jumps).

Taking this one gently and intentionally. It’s a book I want to sit with, reflect on, and journal through —
not rush.
