Intense story about a Scottish teenager who's grown up in the foster care system and institutions for troubled kids.

This is fascinating - a mystery about a famous author who's gone missing, plus some other story threads still to be explained. No idea where any of it's going!

The first half is pretty focused on day-to-day events, but now life is growing more complicated.

"Most of us were here only because Taiwan right then was friendlier to American travelers than mainland China was, or we would have gone to Beijing, and in fact this was a source of great contention with my parents--that I had chosen the program farther from my extended family because I wanted to go where all my friends were going.... I wanted to become Chinese here, on my own terms."

Just fascinating how the story keeps circling back and filling in gaps with surprising revelations.

This is so intense, both the climbing sequences and some of the other events in the characters' lives.

Great description and great characters in this story about two teen friends who love rock climbing!

Still enjoying the ruminations of the protagonist as she reckons with her job as a translator, an obsessive crush, and generally existing.

Odd but compelling, with a sort of stream-of-consciousness style.

Next book club pick. I thought it might take a long time for the three characters to find each other, so I'm glad that happens fairly early, and now we can see how it will play out.

Captivated by the alien cultures, the language-focused plot, and the unfolding mystery!
